The simple beginners guide to Sea fishing
Getting Started with Sea Fishing
Gear you'll need:
- A basic beachcaster or spinning rod (7-9 ft) with a matching reel
- 15-20 lb line to start
- A selection of hooks (sizes 1 to 4/0 depending on target fish)
- Weights/sinkers (varies with tide and casting distance)
- A tackle box for hooks, swivels, and spare line
- Bait: lugworm, ragworm, mackerel strips, or squid all work well
Where to fish:
- Piers and harbour walls are the easiest and safest starting points — no need to cast far, and there's often deeper water close by
- Open beaches work too, especially near rocks, gullies, or where the sand changes to shingle (fish often feed along these edges)
- Rock marks can be productive but are riskier for beginners — always check tide times
Basic technique:
- Cast out past the breaking waves
- Let your weight settle on the bottom
- Reel in the slack line so you can feel bites
- Wait — sea fishing often needs patience. A gentle tap-tap on the line usually means a bite
- When you feel a solid pull, lift the rod tip to set the hook, then reel in steadily
A few tips:
- Check tide times before you go — fishing 2 hours either side of high tide is usually best
- Early morning and evening tend to be more productive than midday
- Always check local rules on size limits and species you're allowed to keep
- Watch the weather and never turn your back on the sea, especially on rocks
